Of Mice and Mummies
Giles: Alright, we’ll meet there tonight, after it closes.
Buffy: No! Bad plan! I have other plans! Dance plans!
(Giles gives her a look.)
Buffy (glumly): Canceled plans.

Well, the planned trip to see my high school friend (and one time prom date), Brooke*, came unraveled. Seems that Brooke’s daughter Gia had a squirrelly lab test come back from her physician, and that caused a cascade of events that led to the necessity of them not taking their trip out west at this time. There’s no diagnosis, much less a prognosis for Gia, but there does come a time when prudence must win out over more delayable stuff.
Still, despite the disappointment that we all shared, Brooke and I enjoyed a pretty good chat on the phone. To any of the young folk who may be reading: let this be a lesson. Always try to keep in touch with your friends from school (at all levels). As the years pass, you are always reminded of why your became friends to begin with. True friends are life-long. You just click.
Needless to say, this has temporarily thrown me off my schedule. Most of this week had been planned around this reunion. Still, given the television shopping I suddenly have to do (the family TV is dying, and a smaller one turns off after fifteen minutes), the sudden appearance of extra time will be filled. I might even find a few hours to do a small painting before the 16-day flame that is the Olympic Games draws this moth’s attention away from life’s more mundane tasks.
For now, at least, we think of the trip as not being canceled, but postponed. I just hope that Gia is fine (or will soon be), and that Brooke doesn’t stress out too much. After all…
