The Women’s Basketball Refereeing Problem

In the National Semi-finals of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, I don’t think anyone was particularly happy about the refereeing. No one will say so explicitly lest they be sanctioned by the NCAA (fines for participants, access for press) but the whistle-holders were conspicuous in their inconsistency. There needs to be some reform.

2010-11 Maryland Women’s Basketball First Thoughts

It’s that time of year again. Classes have begun, the temperature is cooling, and a Terp’s thoughts turn to the Comcast Center and the upcoming women’s basketball season. Every year starts with the desire to win a national championship. Do the Terps have a shot, or is it Uconn/Tennessee/Baylor/Stanford’s to lose?

Can We Level the Title IX Playing Field?

Is it time to rethink how scholarships are distributed in college athletics? The head-butting between Title IX and Football has resulted in some inequities that should be addressed for the health of all college varsity sports.

On NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Expansion

There has been a lot of talk about expanding the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament on the men’s side from 65 to 96 teams. As a result, there is also talk of altering the women’s side of the tournament as well. Some suggestions make more sense than others.

What’s So Special About UConn? Nothing, Really.

The University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball team’s record now stands at 74-0 double-digit wins and counting. The amazing thing is that this sort of dominance isn’t unusual for the Huskies. The 2009 WNBA 11-player Roster SNAFU

The WNBA has had a history of making very considered moves to help the league not only survive but grow. This past offseason, due to the effects of the economic downslide, the WNBA announced that, for the 2009 season, rosters would be cut from thirteen spots down to eleven. Did the league err?

Tiered Tournament Brackets

I’ve never been a fan of conventional tournament brackets. They are essentially set up as coronation runs for the top seed.I think the best course is a little bit of “favored nation” combined with a bit of randomness to make things interesting. I suggest a tiered system.

First Thoughts – 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

The Bracket has been announced. The question is, will this be a coronation of UConn, or will someone be able to rise up to stop their run? Overall, I think this has been the fairest bracket in recent memory, but it does seem that the Trenton region (UConn’s) is a bit easier than the other three. Still, upsets await the unwary.

2009 WNBA Draft – Pre-tournament Scout

As we complete the last week or so of the regular season for most of Division I, I’ve started considering what the upcoming WNBA draft is going to look like. I like to make my selections now instead of tournament time because the one-or-done format can rob some prospects of equal consideration.

Anticipating 2008 Maryland Women’s Basketball

There are some that forecast a difficult year for Maryland Women’s Basketball. I think they are going to have an easier go of it than Tennessee or LSU, who got decimated by graduation. Maryland still has Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman to take this young team back for their second natty.
