An Idea For Naming Planets, Stars, and Galaxies

I agree with the idea that we need a new way to name celestial bodies that helps the public feel a bit more in touch with the cosmos. We have two major problems with that now: the vast number of objects, and the limited number of thematic names we’ve traditionally used.

Nameless Jerseys Revisited

A little over three years ago I bemoaned the fact that Tennessee had elected to not have their player’s names on their jerseys. Since then, the policy has spread like an epidemic from school to school. I still think that this dubious practice is bad for women’s basketball and quite possibly for team sports in general.

Nameless Jerseys

Last year, when I saw the Tennessee Women’s Basketball Team take to the court with no jersey personalization–after years with names on player’s uniforms–I was deeply saddened. 2004 will forever be, for me, the year when women’s sports took a small step backward.

Musing on…”Lou Gehrig’s Disease”

For as long as I can remember, whenever the media refer to ALS, it’s almost immediately followed with some form of: “Also known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s disease’.” I was just thinking that shouldn’t it be about time that that the “Lou Gehrig” part be dropped?
