A short post or comment (well, for me) about some topic that doesn’t warrant a full blog article.

Good News – City Worker Helps More Than Rules Permit

I have to be really vague so they don’t get into trouble, but I need to thank a city employee who went the extra mile for me today. While he might have exceeded what he was allowed to do by law, he certainly rose up to the level of what he was supposed to do as a “neighbor” and human being.

Please, Correct Your Aspect Ratio

OK, this is driving me nuts. People, attend to your aspect ratios. I’m sick to death of 16:9 (widescreen) videos being scrunched to 4:3 (normal). Though it happens a little less frequently, stretching 4:3 vids to fit 16:9 is just as awful.

3 Favorite Anna Ellison Cakes

The art director for Charm City Cakes (seen via the Food Network on Ace of Cakes) has an eye for design that makes her work stand out. Sure, other decorators make amazing cakes, but week-in week-out, Anna’s cakes have something… something… something more. Three of them stand out in my mind.

Fed Up With Partisan Knee-Jerks

Watching President Obama’s not-a-State-of-the-Union address in front of a joint session of Congress after his first month in office show in no uncertain terms how screwed up our political system is. A number of times, especially early on before the word got passed around that it looked bad on TV) when the Democrat-side of the chamber was applauding, the Republican-side sat on their hands in unison. It was embarrassing.

Quick Thoughts on the 2009 Academy Awards

It’s been interesting reading what so many entertainment reporters have been saying about the most recent ceremony that Hollywood puts on to hand out awards to its own. I never forget that the purpose of the show is no different than what happens in school auditoriums at the end of their year. It’s just that with the people being entertainers and all, they like to do things up just a bit better.

Making a Memorable Valentine’s Day

In a world filled with love in all its guises: requited, unrequited, kinky, quiet, romantic, and scores more, memories abound of Valentine’s Day. I have not been immune. I, too, have a Valentine’s day memory to share.

Anna Ellison, the Muse of Cakes

I love “Ace of Cakes”. It’s one of the most entertaining shows on television. There’s heart, humor, art, and oh-no-they-dint moments in most episodes. That said, there is one person on the Charm City Cakes staff that is guaranteed to make me watch episode after episode: art director Anna Ellison.

Godspeed, President Barack Obama

Every inauguration is different, but every one is also the same. There is the song of hope. Hope that the government will do right by its people, and also the hope that the people will do right for each other and the nation. Now it’s President Obama’s time of service to all of America’s people.

American Idol Vs FOX’s Other Shows

Another season of American Idol is upon us. A ratings juggernaut that tends to leave havoc in its wake. Often, this havoc is mentioned in regards to what other networks have to do in order to lessen any damage that Idol will cause. I can’t help but wonder if Idol actually does more damage to all of the other shows on the FOX network.

The Importance of Good Gifts

Sometimes things just stick, you know? Every Christmas season since I first saw the performance of Cathy Ladman’s comedy vignette about the “Wisemens”, the absurdity of the routine pops up in my mind and makes me smile. But hey, isn’t joy what the season is about?
