Trying To Make English Easier

Every generation finds English being tested by the young (and smart-asses, let’s be fair). It keeps the language vibrant. Plus, English does have bits that could deal with some tweaking. Though I’m no longer young (but I am the other thing), I’d be remiss in not mentioning some tweaks of my own.

Amulets, Talismans, and Symbols

I’ve been thinking recently of what seems to be a very human trait: the use of amulets, talismans, and symbols. I’m sure there must be a few examples out in the animal kingdom that also use these, but for the most part it seems to be one of the few quirks that separates humans from all the other living beings. They are ubiquitous. Except perhaps for the most primitive small groups, you don’t have to look hard to find these facets in all of human existence.

Today, I was standing in line at the store. There were a few people behind me, and one pair was talking. One of them started a sentence with, “If we can send a man to the Moon…” Argh. Oh, how I hate hearing that phrase. I didn’t used to, twenty-to-thirty years ago.
