Blogs mostly about my life

Having the Courage To Follow Your Heart

Should you, as Steve Jobs said, “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition”? What if everyone did that? Or is this just a philosophy applicable only to those who successfully completed this journey?

The Blog-slowdown Dog Days of Summer

A few of you have told me you’ve noticed I haven’t been posting to the blog as often as you’d become accustomed to. That’s totally mea culpa. I got enough piled on my life-plate that I needed to find some slack somewhere.

Being Other In Times Of Pain

I’ve mentioned before that I have aspects of my personality that are very likely due to some degree of Asperger’s syndrome. For many things, especially knowledge-based things, these quirks are actually kind of nifty. But there’s a flip-side that rears its head that puts me separate from what I see in others

New Mexico’s Emerald Fruit

For those of us whose local ancestry goes back to colonial days, chile is part of who we are. This year’s chile crop has been outstanding…and we are basking in its quality.

Killing Time With “Switched at Birth”

I do something that is common to a lot of writers: when I’m not writing on one of my own projects, I often spend some of my free time working on fantasy projects. These projects are ones that for various reasons I can’t take on as my own. Right now, I find my imagination has been captured by the new show, Switched at Birth.

Revisiting Old Daunts

I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we all have “ordinary” situations that we consistently find intimidating or overwhelming–events that stress you out even when you only think about doing them. I know I’ve got a couple that rear their heads from time-to-time.

Cone-Headedness

I spent part of the afternoon working out the properties of a cone without using references other than remembering the requisite formulas regarding circles and right triangles. (Yes, I do stuff like this for fun. #dontjudgeme)

I Don’t Believe, But I Still Have Faith

I like to think I have an inquisitive and rational mind. Many around me with a similar bent are content with thinking that life is just what it is. Nothing more. As closely as I toe that line of reason, the fact is that I simply can’t bring myself to go all the way to eschewing any thought of something more regardless of the lack of incontrovertible evidence.

CJ’s Best Christmas Memories So Far

As you can imagine, after a half-century of Christmases a lot of them exhibit some degree of sameness. Traditions do that, being that you have a routine that is more-or-less followed year after year. Even so, amid the truckloads of presents and visits by Santa, I’ve managed to have a memory or two stick with me.

The Bucket List

“The Bucket List” is an interesting concept: a list of things that you want to do before you die (a/k/a “kicking the bucket”). It’s like a checklist of goals to achieve before it’s too late to achieve them. The lists are as varied as there are people.

CJ’s Faux Beef Gravy (Vegetarian)

One of the things that tends to go missing in a vegetarian diet is beef gravy (yeah, go figure). Generally speaking, this isn’t a problem, but if you have something like mashed potatoes, you can start feeling like the odd person out.

Of Course I Was Bullied

In the 60s and 70s, if you were a “Braniac”, one thing was almost certain: you were going to be bullied. Being smart wasn’t cool, it was exclusionary. It was also like painting a target on your back.

The Confused Weird Kid

You know that weird kid you knew back in school? Well…I was that kid. I didn’t mean to be the weird kid, that was just how it was. Of course, if I’m being honest, I don’t think I ever really grew out of it.

Anime On My Mind

I’ve had anime and manga on my mind, lately. I’ve been watching shows and drawing images in this distinctive style quite a bit in the past month or so. I can’t put my finger on why, exactly, except that I’ve been a fan of the style since its early days in America.

Say Hello to My Walk-assisting Friend

My knee recently got injured (again). Because of the pain, and a careless relapse on my part, I was having some difficulty getting around. That is, until I pulled out of the garage one of my dad’s projects to help me out.
