The Necessity of Leaving Earth Within 2 Billion Years

The timeline for human life is finite. If we don’t kill ourselves off, or totally deplete our planet, then we have only about 2+ billion years to find a way to continue on with our species. That’s much shorter than is often thought, so we clearly must adjust our timetables for the need to develop a means to not only live outside our solar system, but our galaxy.

We Commend Thee, Kay Yow (1942-2009)

NC State leader, Maryland nemesis, basketball icon, a cancer inspiration. There are so many ways to describe Kay Yow, who died early on January 24, 2009. Much will be written about her accomplishments, which I’ll not repeat. I do, however, have a few comments.

Another Loan Paid

In a period where both our financial institutions and the people who borrow from them are reeling from not being realistic about monetary matters, I think we can use as many fiscally conservative people (yes, like me) as we can find. Today I mailed off the final payment for my car.

Obama’s First Policy Stumble

It’s amazing. President Barak Obama didn’t even last his first week before one of his boneheaded policy desires started fast-tracking through Congress. Though seemingly innocuous to some, the push to delay the digital television transition is capricious and ill-advised.

Boomerang Character – Buffy Summers

A boomerang character is one you keep returning to as: new stories arise, new incarnations are presented, or you revisit their previous adventures as comfort food. These characters are iconic. They resonate. In this installment: Buffy Summers.

Logitech USB Desktop Microphone

I’ve used a lot of microphones in my day. Regular readers of this blog know that I’m not above doing a podcast when the occasion warrants. I also use Skype for a VOIP application, and I’m a frequent user of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Right now, the mic I’m using the most, and am the happiest with, is the Logitech USB Desktop Microphone.

Godspeed, President Barack Obama

Every inauguration is different, but every one is also the same. There is the song of hope. Hope that the government will do right by its people, and also the hope that the people will do right for each other and the nation. Now it’s President Obama’s time of service to all of America’s people.

Caryatid – My Favorite Sculpture

Great art can affect you. It touches you. You can see the work thousands of times, and you still feel the power of the message. More importantly, you are drawn into the work and can feel yourself taking the place of the subject. For me, the best example of a great sculpture is Rodin’s image of a pathetic, yet heroic, Caryatid.

TTSCC – Cameron’s Fate If The Connors Stop Skynet’s Creation

The Connors manage to prevent the creation of Skynet. Policies are put in place to prevent any A.I. from having complete control of military resources. All personnel and terminators sent to the past from different timeline(s) are killed in their own fashion…all except one: Cameron Phillips. If victory is gained and Cameron survives, what becomes of her?

Thinking About Getting a DSLR Camera

In the pre-digital days, I was a photographer. I stopped while film was still king. Now that I again want to take the quality of pictures I was trained to take, I must decide if it’s time to buy the sort of equipment I was trained to use.

Thinking About “New Boobs”

On her profile on a popular social networking site, a 20-something actress/writer/humorist/cool person directed her friends to get more info on her “new book, new shows, new movie, new boobs”. Needless to say, that’s been quite the attention-grabber. I mean, who doesn’t want to know more about the new book, the new shows, and the new movie? Even so, I think I’m going to go down the road less traveled and concentrate on the “new boobs”.

American Idol Vs FOX’s Other Shows

Another season of American Idol is upon us. A ratings juggernaut that tends to leave havoc in its wake. Often, this havoc is mentioned in regards to what other networks have to do in order to lessen any damage that Idol will cause. I can’t help but wonder if Idol actually does more damage to all of the other shows on the FOX network.

Once More Joss Whedon, You’re Evil… With Feeling

I got bored a few days ago. I was staring at my DVD collection when out of the corner of my eye I spied the Season 6 set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I haven’t gotten much of a Buffy fix for a year or two. I especially hadn’t watched the musical episode “Once More, With Feeling”. So, I popped in the episode (again), watched the features (again), listened to the commentary (again), and sang along (again). So, why is Joss Whedon evil?

Things That Have Made Me Happy

Once you’ve lived long enough, and have a lot of memories in the ol’ grouch bag, it’s hard not to pause every now and then to consider that unique collection that adds up to your life. Like you, I have a variety of event-mementos good, bad, and hard to define. Mostly, though, I prefer to pull out those things that still make me smile.
