Getting Serious About Solving the Economic Mess – March 2009

The stock market continues to tank. Banks are teetering on the brink. General Motors’ auditors say that it likely will end up in bankruptcy. Meanwhile the new Congress and President are settling in for their very familiar dance. As I’m getting tired of hearing the same ol’ same ol’, I think it’s time that we just deal with what needs dealing with.

Tennis Team

From my house, I have a lovely view of several of the local high school’s sports fields, but the one I can see best, and the one that brings back the most memories, are the tennis courts. I look on those young people out there and a myriad of thoughts spring into being.

Mankind’s Next Evolutionary Step – Cyborgs and Robots?

I’ve been devoting a fair amount of thought to how humanity will be able to extend its reach beyond our planet and solar system. Even if we solved all of our local problems and could survive for an indefinite time on our planet, the fact is that the universe has a gun pointed at us. Whether it’s due to our aging sun or the impending collision with our neighboring galaxy, our time on Earth has an expiration date. How can we beat this cosmic clock and endure?

The Present Giving Conundrum

As I start writing this, there are about 105 minutes before Mary’s birthday. She always poses me with a vexing problem every March 4: what to do with recognizing the fact. It’s not so simple as many might suppose.

Mezzetta Calamata Olives

I enjoy olives. People know that and try to be helpful…so I’ve eaten a lot of green, stuffed olives, and boring/bland black olives. While this fruit can be prepared in any number of ways, my go-to in recent years has been Mezzetta’s version of calamata (kalamata) olives.

Season 3 For Terminator – The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Can Terminator – The Sarah Connor Chronicles avoid the cancellation block and get renewed for a third season? Despite what some of the knee-jerk naysayers are naysaying, I believe that FOX still has reason to stick with the show provided a few small changes are made.

Military Cowardice in Washington, D.C.

In prosecuting their wars, both the president and the Congress have taken the politically safe road while simultaneously flouting the intent of the founders when they drafted the Constitution. Wars are fought though never declared. The forces are under-manned. As an American, I find it insulting.

T:TSCC 0216 – Some Must Watch, While Some Must Sleep

A whirlwind of dreams and reality mix to reveal how difficult it must be to be Sarah Connor. She views the world in her own special way. Mostly, though, her world revolves around John. John and Cameron. But mostly John. If only that world were larger, I’d likely be giving a better review.

Therefore I Blog – A Lot

I got an email from a relatively new subscriber who said that she noticed that my byline was on every article. She wondered if I’d actually written everything or if I was just taking the credit. The story?

3 Favorite Anna Ellison Cakes

The art director for Charm City Cakes (seen via the Food Network on Ace of Cakes) has an eye for design that makes her work stand out. Sure, other decorators make amazing cakes, but week-in week-out, Anna’s cakes have something… something… something more. Three of them stand out in my mind.

Magic 8-Ball

Yes, I know this isn’t exactly a new product, but I can’t think of another one that is more compelling. If you see a Magic 8-Ball® on someone’s desk, dresser, coffee table, toy chest, underwear drawer (don’t ask), or wherever, it takes more self-control than you’d think to not want to ask it a question or two…or a dozen.

Fed Up With Partisan Knee-Jerks

Watching President Obama’s not-a-State-of-the-Union address in front of a joint session of Congress after his first month in office show in no uncertain terms how screwed up our political system is. A number of times, especially early on before the word got passed around that it looked bad on TV) when the Democrat-side of the chamber was applauding, the Republican-side sat on their hands in unison. It was embarrassing.

2009 WNBA Draft – Pre-tournament Scout

As we complete the last week or so of the regular season for most of Division I, I’ve started considering what the upcoming WNBA draft is going to look like. I like to make my selections now instead of tournament time because the one-or-done format can rob some prospects of equal consideration.
