Musing on…The Bee’s Knees

We’ve got bees!

When I first moved into my house, this wasn’t a happy statement. We had a hive of bees firmly ensconced in the fireplace chimney, and they had a nasty habit of flying into the house, uninvited.

When I first moved into my house, this wasn’t a happy statement. We had a hive of bees firmly ensconced in the fireplace chimney, and they had a nasty habit of flying into the house, uninvited. It was so bad that the chimney needed to be sealed (as the sleeve was cracked anyway, this wasn’t a great loss).

Flash forward seventeen years. As I’m scraping and sanding the part of the house nearest to a smooth-leaf holly tree, I notice that it’s filled with bees going from blossom to blossom. Normally I wouldn’t have taken much note of this, but given the decimation of bee populations around the country over the past few years, and the rarity of seeing any bees at all last year, I was very happy. We’ve got bees!
