Rec’ing on…Holdsclaw Retires From WNBA and Pro Basketball

Like most, I was surprised at the June 11 announcement that Chamique Holdsclaw was retiring from basketball, and at the same time not at all surprised.  Am I sorry to see her go?  That’s a tough one.  The ‘Mique who burst on the scene with the Mystics…that player I’m sorry to see go; but she hasn’t been around for years, now.  The oft-injuried player who took many personal leaves and then quit the Mystics, only to return and phone-in her game with the Sparks until another season-in-progress exit…that player leaving only helps the WNBA.

Don’t get me wrong; I only wish Ms Holdsclaw has as rich and fulfilling a life as she’s hoping to find.  But as a representative of WNBA basketball, she has been, of late, disappointing.  So many talented players can’t make a roster because the WNBA is stocked to the gills with outstanding players.  Chamique has MVP-class talent, but not the heart or the hunger.  It was obvious that basketball ceased to be something that she loved but was instead something that she was able to do well–when she cared to.  That’s not the role model you want to have in your league.

Still, I remember those first few years with the Mystics.  When she was healthy, my was she a joy to watch.  Too bad she didn’t have a large-enough pool of supporting talent, or a coach strong enough, to encourage her to share the on-court wealth.  Tamika Catchings (the second of Tennessee’s three Meeks) has had a similar path in her career, but with one big difference…she has never lost the desire.

So, Chamique, I hope you find what you are looking for.  I think you will.  You had the courage to step away from expectations, and that is not very easy to do.  You were a joy to watch, but in the grand scheme of things, I think it’s more important that you find the right path for you.  I think if the only accolade you receive from this point forward is that you are a good person…well, I don’t think any one of us can reasonably ask for more from you or ourselves.  Take care.
