Welcome Back, Women’s Professional Soccer
After too long an absence, the always entertaining women of soccer return to the professional pitch for the first time since the WUSA folded. Yes, it’s time for Women’s Processional Soccer (WPS).
The inaugural game of the new WPS league kicks off on Sunday March 29, 2009 at 6:00pm EDT. The match will feature the reigning WUSA camps, the Washington Freedom, going against the Los Angeles Sol at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. While there are bound to be some nerves, this promises to be an fun game to watch with both teams featuring rosters of some of the best players currently in soccer from around the world.
The Los Angeles Sol features the likes of Olympic Gold Medalists Sannon Boxx, Stephanie Cox (nee Lopez), Aly Wagner, as well as the great Brazilian star, Marta. Washington counters with their own constellation which includes: Briana Scurry, Cat Whitehill, Abby Wambach, and Japanese star Homare Sawa.
This inaugural match, as well as matches throughout the season will be available to cable and satellite customers in the US who are able to receive the FOX Soccer Channel (hehe…I’m one of those). If you can tune in, I can almost guarantee some very entertaining futbol. How do I know? I watched the WUSA. These women now are no less talented than those women then…so it’s going to be a fun ride.
