New Home For “Under The Shell”
The behind-the-scenes show, Under the Shell, which follows the University of Maryland Women’s Basketball team both on-and-off the court, has found itself a new home at www.undertheshell.tv. This new site features all the episodes of Under the Shell from the previous four seasons as well as the current season to-date.
Any fan of women’s basketball, not just Maryland fans, should treasure this resource of what it is like to be in one of the top programs in the country. Any college recruit should watch this to see that it takes to be among the elite of the college elite. More importantly, you get an extended view of the Maryland Women’s Basketball family that tells you about the team and the coaches beyond the recruiting visits and your own recruiting trips.
Seriously, if I was a recruit, based on this series, I’d be wanting to make Maryland one of my top picks. Who wouldn’t want to be lead by “Coach B”, as Maryland’s vibrant head coach Brenda Frese is often called? Yeah, she’ll yell when necessary, but won’t tear you a new one like some other top coaches have been shown to do.
But even if Maryland isn’t in the cards for you, or even basketball, this series is still fun to watch. You get some prime basketball action, but you also get to see that when you commit to a top program at a leading university it’s more than just about the basketball. It’s about family and community.
Yes, the team is made up of athletes, but they are first-and-foremost students that are held to a high standard since they are a very public face of the university (in her six years as head coach at Maryland, Coach B has had a 100% graduation rate). Classes don’t get skipped or arrived at late with this group…there will be consequences. They also devote time to things like Special Olympics, breast cancer awareness, and community outreach to those who could use a spark of enthusiastic youth.
Of course there is more to learn about Maryland Women’s Basketball than what’s available from Under the Shell. The program has its own website: marylandwomensbasketball.com that is more than just your run-of-the mill team web page. You really should check it out.
