Seedlessness

OK, that’s it.  Never again.  The watermelon I brought home from the market turned out to be seedless (aren’t they supposed to mark these things?).  It has got to be the worst I’ve had yet.

Several years ago, these abominations started appearing in the stores.  The seedless watermelon.  They were to appease the public outcry (for some reason) against watermelons with seeds.  The result?  Fruit with immature and tasteless meat.  Yeah, they are 99.9% seedless but the cost is a total absence of quality.

And it’s not just watermelon.  Think of the supermarket tomato.  That tasteless red glob sold throughout the nation.  Fortunately they are starting to sell vine-ripened tomatoes of the same variety that taste better.  Not the best, but better.  (My brother has been growing some other varieties of tomato, so I’m getting to taste what the real thing is supposed to taste like.)

Now, I’m not against progress.  It’s nice having high-yield, disease-resistant fruit, but sometimes I think the price is too high.  So many items in the produce section now taste like nothing.  Oh, they look pretty, but they taste like nothing.  I’m done with it.  If I can’t find anything at the farmer’s market, then I guess I’ll be trekkin’ over to Whole Foods–they aren’t perfect, and they aren’t cheap, but they’re better than most. (addendum: even Whole Foods is letting me down :( )
