Legal Daze
Today was lawyer day. With my parents getting older, and my dad in declining health, it was time to revisit the lawyer who had drawn up their papers over a decade ago. With matters of asset management and health decisions in the mix, we all felt it was necessary to get clarity on some issues. I found the meeting very informative, and I feel better equipped to face some of the bumps that are looming down the road ahead.
Here’s a funny thing: starting from days before the meeting, my mom was telling me the things that needed to be discussed and everything. She was working herself into increasing states of nervousness and insisted that I do almost all of the talking. Yep, you guessed it, once the meeting started, it was she who monopolized the family’s said of the dialog. She makes me smile sometimes.
Yeah, doing all of this legal stuff costs many hundreds of dollars. I hate having to spend that money, but I think in the long run it’s well worth it. If nothing else, we have a relationship with a law firm that we can turn to when some of life’s passages make us stumble a bit. The peace of mind alone makes the expense palatable.
