U-turn and Then They’re Gone

Wow. I don’t usually see traffic accidents as they happen. Today, coming from getting some dinner from the store, I got a box-seat. And you could see it evolving, too, so it was definitely like having tickets to the theatre.

I’m driving along our three-lane side of the boulevard when this SUV makes an ill-timed, but still reasonably safe U-turn onto our direction. The driver turns wide and ends up in my lane, farthest from the median…but s/he doesn’t stop there. Oh no. The driver continues the U, making more of a C, in an effort, I guess, to return to the far left lane. The other SUV, in the center lane, brakes leisurely to avoid any incident, but the sporty coupe in the left lane…?

The driver of the car never slows down, though there is enough time for her to see and react. The U-turn f-head just keeps squeezing the car in as if nothing was there at all. Then there’s tire screeching, and smoke from burned rubber. The right front of the car is totally blitzed. I can’t see the damage to the SUV, but the driver keeps up their a-hole ways and makes a dash for the intersection. I follow, hoping to at least get a partial off the plates. Unfortunately, the driver lucks out; though the light turns red, they have no vehicles in front of them, and I do, so they manage to escape without being ID’d by me.

I looped around to where the accident had occurred, but the victim had already moved on, leaving me 0-for-2 in the being helpful department. Oh well. At least I tried.

PS: On my way home, another genius made an incredibly ill-advised U-turn in front of me, with no lasting consequences. What…? Did stupid get put in the city’s water today? Geesh.
