VICTORY!!!
Brandi Chastain’s top-twirling celebration after she kicked the goal which secured the USA victory over China in the 1999 Women’s World Cup spoke volumes about the changes women in sports have seen in a generation. Nothing was more important in the US than Title IX. (An introduction can be found at the Feminist Majority Foundation’s Women & Girls in Sports page along with additional links.) Her celebration also showed the world that feminine fitness is attractive and that athletic exuberance knows no modesty (and I’m sure ABC Sports thanks US Soccer’s sports bra supplier because of that).
