Rec’ing on…Selection Monday
The Maryland Women’s Basketball team has been ranked in the top-ten most of this season. They’ve only had four losses…all of them to three teams (Tennessee, Duke, UNC) ranked either 1 or 2 at the time. They’ve beaten two of those teams, again while they were ranked 1 or 2 at the time (Duke, UNC). They are the third-ranked team in the nation after nearly two months being the fourth-ranked team in the nation. And still I’m thinking that the NCAA selection committee isn’t going to give them a top-seed.
Why?
There’s been a decided lack-of-love for the Terrapins. They stayed mired at #6 when they should have been able to move up at least one spot. That they managed a #4 and #3 ranking has more to do with other teams’ losses forcing the issue than with the pollsters cheering on the blank and gold (or red and white…we’ve got a lot of colors). It’s this mindset, combined with a reticence of the selection committee to have three teams from the same conference taking top seeds, that will relegate the Terps to a #2 seed.
We’ll see. Selections will be announced in about four hours. I imagine I’ll have more to say afterwards.
