“Working long days and weeks has been incontrovertibly proven to be the stupidest, most expensive way there is to get work done.” By getting the executive suite types to understand this affects their profits (i.e. end-of-year mega-bonuses), maybe then their … Continue reading

Rob Reid: The $8 billion iPod (TED)
Something that I rail against is the abhorrent greed shown by the entertainment industries. It’s really amazing that they are in business at all given that (according to their armies of accountants and lawyers) nothing ever actually makes money. Continue reading
What Could Have Been Entering the Public Domain on January 1, 2012?
“That means that all these examples from 1955 are only the tip of the iceberg. If the pre-1978 law were still in effect, we could have seen 85% of the works created in 1983 enter the public domain on January … Continue reading
Clayton Christensen: How Pursuit of Profits Kills Innovation and the U.S. Economy (Forbes)
I have been saying for decades that business schools, essentially, mostly just teach the brethren how to cook the books in a mostly legal way. Going through several MBA courses, nothing really conflicted with that assertion. Economics should be more … Continue reading
Why Amazon Can’t Make A Kindle In the USA (Forbes)
Some of us have been nattering about this since the 80s. The suits and bean-counters haven’t wanted to listen. Some, just SOME, need to start listening for their (and our) survival. Grow. Innovate. Expect great. Think long-term—not just for the … Continue reading
When Life Gives You Lemons, Monetize the Lemonade

I must admit, I’m torn by the two views of the world, the two mindsets, this conflict represents. Continue reading
George Whitesides: A Lab the Size of a Postage Stamp
This is one of those times when you have to applaud innovative thinking. You define the problem. You define the restraints. You try to find an efficient solution. Even better, you can actually do something helpful. George Whitesides: A lab … Continue reading
Health Don’t Care Anymore
I have five drafts of healthcare blogs written over the past several months. I decided instead of making researched arguments which were all but impossible to make accessible, I’d just do a quick blog on my thoughts and conclusions. Continue reading
President Obama, Give Us a Yard and We’ll Take a Meter
For all intents and purposes, the United States stands alone in relying on an inefficient and antiquated measurement system. For decades the cry has been that it will be too expensive or too inconvenient or too confusing to change to the worldwide metric standard. With the current economy in dire straits, can we really afford this ridiculous policy? Not only does it makes us look like provincial boobs, but (and this will get people’s attention) it costs us money. If ever there was a golden time to attack the problem with a bold mandate for change, this is it. Continue reading
