The Women’s Basketball Refereeing Problem

foulcall 240

In the National Semi-finals of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, I don’t think anyone was particularly happy about the refereeing. No one will say so explicitly lest they be sanctioned by the NCAA (fines for participants, access for press) but the whistle-holders were conspicuous in their inconsistency. There needs to be some reform. Continue reading

2010-11 Maryland Women’s Basketball First Thoughts

umbasketball-260

It’s that time of year again. Classes have begun, the temperature is cooling, and a Terp’s thoughts turn to the Comcast Center and the upcoming women’s basketball season. Every year starts with the desire to win a national championship. Do the Terps have a shot, or is it Uconn/Tennessee/Baylor/Stanford’s to lose? Continue reading

What’s So Special About UConn? Nothing, Really.

uconn74n0 280

The University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball team’s record now stands at 74-0 double-digit wins and counting. The amazing thing is that this sort of dominance isn’t unusual for the Huskies. It makes you wonder: factoring the talent, the tactics, the defenses, what’s so special about UConn? The truth is, not that much. Continue reading

The 2009 WNBA 11-player Roster SNAFU

uclosewnbadrft-209

The WNBA has had a history of making very considered moves to help the league not only survive but grow. Now, having seen the players playing outside of their conferences at season’s end, as well has having more information concerning WNBA team needs, and factoring the comments from around the web about my previous post, I’d agree that my previous list needs some tweaking. Continue reading

There really isn’t much to say about Marissa Coleman’s performance during the game between Maryland and Vanderbilt in the “Sweet Sixteen” game of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament that isn’t covered by, “Wow.” Continue reading

The 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, like any 64-team tournament, holds the promise of many interesting games. Games that will be competitive. Games featuring teams I want to watch. This tournament is touted by ESPN as having all the games available. Well…perhaps for some. Continue reading

Tiered Tournament Brackets

home-tournament-64-thumb1

I’ve never been a fan of conventional tournament brackets. They are essentially set up as coronation runs for the top seed.I think the best course is a little bit of “favored nation” combined with a bit of randomness to make things interesting. I suggest a tiered system. Continue reading

First Thoughts – 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

wbb09ncaabkt-280

The Bracket has been announced. The question is, will this be a coronation of UConn, or will someone be able to rise up to stop their run? Overall, I think this has been the fairest bracket in recent memory, but it does seem that the Trenton region (UConn’s) is a bit easier than the other three. Still, upsets await the unwary.
