History. On January 26, 1975, the United States witnessed something it had never seen before: a nationally televised women’s basketball game. The visitors were the Mighty Macs from Immaculata versus the Terrapins of Maryland. Immaculata came in as the three-time AIAW Division-I champions. Continue reading

2010-11 Maryland Women’s Basketball — A Few Tweaks Toward Greatness

umbasketball-260

The Maryland women’s basketball team has a youthful core that is very reminiscent of the 2005-06 championship team. They still have some tweaking, though, to reach that level–sometimes they look like a very young team. Fortunately, these adjustments are few and mostly “easily” done. Continue reading

2010-11 Maryland Women’s Basketball First Thoughts

umbasketball-260

It’s that time of year again. Classes have begun, the temperature is cooling, and a Terp’s thoughts turn to the Comcast Center and the upcoming women’s basketball season. Every year starts with the desire to win a national championship. Do the Terps have a shot, or is it Uconn/Tennessee/Baylor/Stanford’s to lose? Continue reading

An article on knoxnews.com brought back a lot of memories. During the 2009 WNBA All-Star game, the 2010 class of inductees into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame was announced. Among the list of six honorees was a woman it was my pleasure to get to know in the ’80s: Former University of Maryland Head Coach Chris Weller. Continue reading

There really isn’t much to say about Marissa Coleman’s performance during the game between Maryland and Vanderbilt in the “Sweet Sixteen” game of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament that isn’t covered by, “Wow.” Continue reading

First Thoughts – 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

The Bracket has been announced. The question is, will this be a coronation of UConn, or will someone be able to rise up to stop their run? Overall, I think this has been the fairest bracket in recent memory, but it does seem that the Trenton region (UConn’s) is a bit easier than the other three. Still, upsets await the unwary. It was another battle to save in the vault between the Terps and the Blue Devils. Though this was the first time they met in the ACC Tournament finals, it wasn’t their first meeting in a final in their history. But, as in the 2006 NCAA Championship game, Maryland toughed it out for a hard-won win (Duke 89 – MD 92). Continue reading

Nameless Jerseys Revisited

nameless-260

A little over three years ago I bemoaned the fact that Tennessee had elected to not have their player’s names on their jerseys. Since then, the policy has spread like an epidemic from school to school. I still think that this dubious practice is bad for women’s basketball and quite possibly for team sports in general.
